Beat the winter chill this year by heading south to Daytona Beach, Florida to experience the thrill of the Daytona 500, arguably the most prestigious of all auto races in the United States. Held during the last week of February each year, the “Great American Race” enjoys the highest attendance and television ratings for any NASCAR event.
Thousands of people vacation in Daytona Beach year round, but finding the best hotels in Daytona Beach should not be difficult. Daytona International Speedway offers visitors plenty of free information on nearby accommodations; even travel packages that can lodge families for multiple nights near the racetrack. Daytona Beach isn’t known for its public transportation system, but it does have a public bus line called VoTran that will carry visitors to and from the speedway. Rental car agencies or taxi services are the only other option for visitors who are staying in a Daytona hotel not situated near the track.
While you’re there, why not experience some of Daytona’s history and culture? The Museum of Arts and Sciences is a great place to visit before or after the race and features the largest permanent collection of Cuban art outside of the Cuban Republic. Superb collections of early American furniture and an extensive gallery of Chinese and Japanese artwork also are on the tour. In addition, the museum contains an entire room dedicated to Florida history, including its historical pirates, early maps and plantations from around the state. Couples and families can take a stroll along Daytona Beach, part of Florida’s long and scenic eastern coastline.
Other NASCAR races are held in Daytona Beach as well, such as the Rolex 24 and the Coke Zero 400. Daytona Beach is also home to the 500,000-person strong Bike Week attended by motorcycle enthusiasts from around the world.
Plenty of fresh seafood and Spanish-influenced restaurants await visitors along Daytona’s beaches and downtown, where the nightlife is always hopping after an exciting day at the races.
To ensure your experience is the best it can be at the speedway, visitors should know what they are permitted to bring. Speedway officials allow the following items through the gates of Daytona International Speedway: binoculars, scanners, headsets, cameras worn around the neck, seat cushions and a soft-sided cooler (14 x 14 x 14 inches), but no telescoping handles or wheels. Fireworks, firearms, hard-sided coolers and ice chests, strollers and umbrellas are strictly prohibited from entering the track.
Keep these tips in mind to ensure your Daytona 500 trip will be stress-free and fun. Whether you’re heading down to the beach before or after the “Superbowl of Stock Car Racing,” you’re sure to have an entertaining time that will put a sunnier outlook on February from now on.
